VOS Nippon is a certified NPO based in Japan. We use monitoring equipment installed onboard commercial vessels to gather oceanographic data, which we make openly and freely available for use by any individual and/or organization. Data on sea surface temperature, salinity, etc., gathered from the Asian seas, the Pacific Ocean and the coastal waters of Japan may be downloaded from this site.
We firmly believe that our continued efforts over the years in the collection of highly accurate data first-hand from the oceans will make a definite contribution to a better understanding of changes in the marine environment; just as ripples will spread wide from a single drop of rain.

Suspension of Underway Observation by the Japan-Australia Vos vessel

The underway observation by the Japan-Australia Vos vessel has been terminated as of February, 2017, due to aging of the vessel and removal of the equipment. The voluntary observation by this commercial ship has made the underway SST and SSS available since June 2002, and the observed data has then been released for public use. We sincerely appreciate cooperation and support by the vessel crew, the operator and its related personnel for the continued operation of the equipment.

The start of the new program to resume the voluntary observation in offshore area has not yet fixed, and we recommend that you utilize the underway data archived since Sept. 2001 from the Data Map, that covers Asian seas, western Pacific, and western south Pacific seas.
